What is Advertising ? : got my sources from google and my notes as well as the Spin and Sell it Documentary
Advertising is an industry which is used to call the attention of the public to something. This is usually a product, service or brand . Advertising is really the communication of a product or service promoting the viewership in order to engage interest, sales and people, to spread the word to others about what your wanting to advertise .There are many different types of advertisement such as radio, broadcasting, television and production placement. When I watched the documentary called Sell and Spin in my Level 2 Media class, I learnt that 1950s Television became extremely popular and over 10 million TV's were sold which was good for advertising companies, as then people at home could watch the adverts and see if they wanted to buy the product .

Review on the Sell and Spin documentary :
In my level 2 media class I am starting a assignment  about  advertising  so to get a bit more knowledge and an idea of what advertising is and how it all started, I watched a  documentary called Sell and Spin which explained it in a bit more detail . While watching the documentary I wrote some notes in my notepad so I had some extra information to refer back to later . I learned that repetition is key to success when creating an advert. The creators of the adverts want people to repeat the sayings in the ads and also attract attention. By telling other people the sayings in the ads they are hopeful people will get  the message and want to start shopping for what they are trying to advertise . I also learned from the Spin and Sell documentary that a successful advertisement just doesn't happen over night they are created  over time and they are researched oriented and researched to perfection .It can take years to make an advert because if the ideas are not liked or not 100% right by the creative team or the advertising specialist it has be redone as they want it to work so they can get sales and consumers to purchase their product .
Apart from making the adverts perfect I learned about the people who made the adverts become what they are today .By watching the documentary I found out that Tony the Tiger who is on the Frosties cereal box ,the Jolly Green Giant and the Marlboro man who is a cowboy to advise tobacco was created by Leo Burnett. Bill Bernbach was the most influential and when the Volkswagen advert came out  it was voted best ever . Leo Burnett used objects such as the Tiger and cowboy because he thought by using the objects it would connect the product to the customers .
When cars started to become popular around 1926, companies had to think what will make people look at our adverts? This is when outdoor advertisement became very popular such as billboards and road signs to catch peoples attention while driving. Advertisers started painting their products on everything  even on aeroplanes in the sky!  No matter how technology- minded this world gets people will always be interested in the sky. On 30  May 1922 was when someone first did an advertisement in the form of sky writing.  A former Royal Air Force officer called Cyril Turner spelled out LONDON DAILY MAIL in black smoke from a S.E.5a over Derby . Pepsi actually started their advertising campaign with sky writing from 1939 -1953.
Not only did the the people at home need television but turns out it helped politicians too .It was important for campaigning and making sure they got the votes. The first political ads went from promoting the candidate then it went to saying negative feedback about them . When Dwight Eisenhower was running for global office, a campaign ad in 1952 was full of standard commercial techniques such as repetition, testimonials and jingles. However, the 1964 Daisy advert represented fear. An advert broadcasted by Lydon Johnson showed his anti - war and nuclear position. However, Barry Goldwater was against the nuclear test ban treaty and suggested the use of nuclear weapons in the Vietnam war if necessary.  This showed the general public the views and what was happening in the world at that time.
I learned that adverts can been seen in everyday life now a days such as seeing ads on the sides of buses and taxis in cities like London.   Many of these promote films and theatre shows that are on.  In Times Square, New York it is famous for its Billboards which advertise products, films, art work and famous scenes from tv and film.  It has been known for Times Square to come to a standstill when people stop to watch the screens for important events etc. On television, radio, newspapers, magazines and on your smart phone advertising is everywhere. The newspaper is what you call mass media which means endless space for people to advertise whatever they want . The only time you cannot see adverts is when you are asleep .I have learned a lot of different things about adverts and how advertising has changed over the years from this Sell and Spin documentary and I am looking forward to what this assignment has to offer .

Notes I made from the sell and spin documentary
