Transition :process or period of changing from one state  or condition  to a another .

Cutting on action: cutting from one shot to another when a subject is still in motion . e.g. character turning or charcter going through a door 
Cut away : a supplementary shot that cuts away from the main action to indicate something else in the space such as  an object or location or to get inside the head of the character and see what they are feeling . 
cross out : the video editing technique  of switching back and fourth between scenes often giving the impression that the action occurring in different locations is unfolding . e.g. most phone conversations in film are filmed by cross cut and cross cutting and amp up the tension and suspense .
Jump cut : where the editor cuts between the same shot and often show the passing time and they can be shown in montages  as well as add a level of urgency in a scene .
Match cut :match the action or the composition in the scene and they are used as scene transitions . Match cuts dont have to be visual either they can be verbal match cuts like in Austin powers films.  
fade in/ fade out :Dissolves to or from black . 
Dissolve :Bland to shots together  . the dissolve transition is commonly used in montages too  and a patten of time 
Smash cut :  A film  editing technique  in which the action cuts abruptly  from one scene  to another to highlight  a dramatic  contrast .
Iris : technique  used in silent film and television  sometimes  to emphasize a detail  of a scene above all the other more commonly to end or open scene.
wipe : One shot replaces  another  by travelling  from one side of the frame to another or  with special shape .
invisible cut : Marry two scene together with similar  frames 
L cut : a film editing  transition  that sees  the audio on on scene or shot overlap into visuals from the next .
J cut :Allows the  viewer  to hear audio for upcoming scene  before picture changes.







Cutting on action is used in the film Mission impossible Ghost Protocol in this scene when Tom Cruise is climbing up the tallest tower to building suspense and tension for the audience . By using cutting on action you also getting to see the characters emotions and the challenges they are facing as well as a bit of the location too .  
Cut away is used in the film Its a Wonderful Life In this scene when George Bailey (James Stewart) asked  Mary Bailey (Donna reed)  if she wants the moon when they are looking at the sky . By the of   cut away  transition it shows the audiences what the characters are feeling but by putting the moon in the scene it shows that Mary Bailey wants George to be there for her and  be a great husband  like the moon is there in the sky . 
Match cut is used in the film Grease in this scene where Danny (John Travolta ) is singing  the song grease lighting in the car shop with the rest of his gang . By using match cut  shows the audience inside Danny mind that he wants a nice car but he only has a scrap one on the next scene .
Cross cut is used in the film Mean Girls 2004  where Cady (Lindsey Lohan ) , Regina   (Rachel McAdam's ), Gretchen ,(Lacey chabert) and Karen  ( Amanda Seyfried ) are having a four way call on the phone all talking about each other .The good way of using  cross cut in this scene is that you can see each of the characters emotions . Been an iconic telephone conversation filmed in cross cut you can see tension between the characters too .
Jump cut is used in the film Little shop of horrors where the three main characters Mr Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia) ,Seymour ( Ricky Moranis) and Audrey (Jackie joseph)are all waiting at Mushnik"s flower shop waiting for  customers and more plants to come in  the good use of Jump cut is that you can see that even though it is the same shot you can it can be used to show the passing of time as well as the characters  facial expressions too .
The Dissolve cut is used in this scene called This Loneliness in The Godfather and  piano scene where Michael ( Al Pacino )  kills Sollozo  ( Al Lettieri)  and McCuskey (sterling Hayden ). By using the dissolve transition  it not only shows the passing of time but shows how even if  people go that are important to you life still goes on  and that is shown through all the different shots .  
This Iris cut is used in the ending scene of the Christmas story back in the day when you could  mainly open and close your iris . however now a days it is used a stylistic choice and zooms on a certain character on object .
This L cut is used in the playing the piano scene  in the Big .  Where The characters  Josh Baskin ( Tom Hanks) and Robert Loggia ( Mr Macmillan ) are in a toy shop where Josh Baskin (Big ) puts his foot on a piano  and it plays a tune  when he hears this tune he transported back to childhood  and continues to play this piano like no one is watching. The L cut  is used well here because the audio is played before you even seen  big or mr Macmillian start playing the piano  so you know they are going to play it . 
This wipe is used in  star wars 1977. inspired by the flash comics  the wipe transitions gives a good idea  of star wars being a good comic movie . they use a wipe transition in star wars to make it more like a comic book like you are turning of the pages instead of watching a scary sci fi film .
This scene uses an invisible cut  in the sting  where henry Gondorff  (Paul Newman)  tricks a man out of winning cards . By the use of The invisible cut  it shows  the audinece the audio of the cards moving and what will happen as well as  hear audio for upcoming scenes for the picture changing  .
